We are delighted that the London Super League, the strong teams league run by Nick Sandqvist,
in which many YC members play, will be making
the Young Chelsea its home starting in January. Full details will be circulated by Nick to all the teams who currently play in the LSL, and to new teams who might want to enter.
Congratulations to club members Frances Hinden, Graham Osborne, John Howard and Andy Bowles (and to their team-mates), who won the UK's premier knockout teams event, the Gold Cup.
Congratulations also to Frances, who won the highest
ever number of Gold Points in a year.
We have two divisions of four teams in our new Teams League, who play a 24 board match against each
of the other three teams in their division. Results from the first month are available.
Many of our members have achievements of note in the latest EBU Master Points Listings. Chris Duckworth was our club champion, followed by Alan Woo and Nigel Bird. Frances Hinden won the greatest ever number of Gold Points in a year.
Oscar Selby won more master points than any other unranked player in London (so he won't be unranked next time!) And the top scoring players in London for all the higher ranks were YC members - too many to list! Well done to all of them.
Well done to the 19 current and past club members who participated in this weekend's Women's trials. Each woman had her moments of bridge glory and agony. Congratulations to Gillian Fawcett, Frances Liew, Chris Duckworth and Nicole Cook who succeeded in qualifying to play in the Lady Milne. We wish them the best of luck! Results
Congratulations to Kitty Teltscher & Stefanie Rohan, who won the first of our new weekly Thursday afternoon games. The game starts at 1pm and
we play an extra round - 26-28 boards, finishing a bit before 4.30pm. There were 8 tables for the first game, and players were invited to stay behind
for a drink & a snack in the bar afterwards. As always at the Young Chelsea, we'll find partners for anyone who comes without, so we'd love to see you on any Thursday afternoon.
Sarah Dunn has won the Autumn Ladder for the second time in a row, after a close-fought contest in which several others might have overtaken her even up
to the last game. She becomes the first player ever to have won this event twice running, and wins a prize of £500.
The third and final game of the fourth season of our popular new pairs league has now taken place, and the first division was won by Gillian Salt, Ian Payn & Jeremy Dhondy with
155 VPs - ten ahead of David Ewart, Sarah Dunn & Gunnar Hallberg. The second division was won jointly by Andrew Bannock, Adrian Scheps & Dick Jordan
and Guy Hart, Mark Lehto & Ingar Hansen with 165 VPs. The next season will start on February 16th.
26 teams have entered the 2011-12 YCKO and the draw is now available. Most teams
start by playing in a triangle, where they play two 24 board matches and two of the three teams go through to the next round.
The first matches will have to be played by February 14th, and once again it was a random draw - no teams
were seeded.
The 2010-11 YCKO was won by Andy Bowles' team (Frances Hinden, Barry Myers & Mike Scoltock, as well as Graham Osborne & John Howard who played in earlier rounds), who beat Gad Chadha
(Graham Orsmond, Cameron Small, Martin Garvey, Sebastian Kristensen & Brian McGuire) in the final.
Since we surrendered the first floor room & the manager's office up the stairs, they have been converted to flats and we have new
neighbours in them. They report that they are continually being disturbed by club members making a noise when leaving the club, and going
in and out to smoke. Please take care not to make a noise when leaving the club, do not bang doors late at night, and do not
go out onto the street to smoke - use the yard outside the playing rooms instead.
The front door should be kept locked at all times - please use the entry-phone
to gain access to the club.
The club has had a Young Chelsea Bridge Club Facebook page for a few years now, prompted by requests from members
to have a way to contact each other to arrange games with their partners, to meet new partners,
for bridge-related discussions, or to discuss other issues to do with the club. The page can be found at
Facebook and anyone can join and contribute to discussions or upload photos, whether or not they are a member of the club. It's a great way
to keep in touch with the club and its members if you can't manage to get to Earl's Court very often.
