Young Chelsea Knockout 2011-2012
We have 26 teams entered for this year's YCKO, and so we have a variation on the usual format to ensure that most teams have at least two games. We have also adjusted the play-by dates of the early rounds so as to facilitate this. The draw below will put most teams in groups of three, and they will play a 24-board match against each of the other two teams in their group. A team that loses both of its matches will be eliminated and the remaining teams will go forward into the next round. If all teams in the group win exactly one match, the team with the lowest IMP score will be eliminated - so please agree your exact score and keep track of it. Those teams who are not in a triple will play a straight knockout. Once again this year the draw is completely random - there are no seeds. Matches are of 24 boards in the first rounds, 32 boards in the quarter-final and semi-final, and 48 boards in the final. They are to be played at the club, and table money is payable for each player (currently £6.50 on Tuesday/Thursday, £7.50 on other days) in addition to the entry fee of £5.00 per player.
Teams may consist of up to six players, and teams with fewer than six members may add players up to a maximum of six, prior to the start of their quarter-final match, providing they have not played in any other team. Thereafter new members may not be added to a team unless agreed by the Bridge Sub-Committee in extreme circumstances (eg the death of a team member).
Although there are no home or away teams and we hope that most matches will be organised amicably and at the teams' mutual convenience, one team in each knockout match (marked in italics in the draw below) has the privilege of offering 3 dates to the other team should any difficulties arise. These dates should not all be in the same 7-day period or on the same day of the week; nor should they be at a weekend. (The teams may agree to play their match at a weekend if it is mutually convenient and the date coincides with the club being open for another event). In the triple stage of the event, the privilege of offering dates, if necessary, goes to the lower numbered team, except that the highest-numbered team may offer dates to the lowest-numbered - ie 1 offers to 2, 2 offers to 3, 3 offers to 1.
All players must be up to date with their membership before playing - a team fielding a player whose membership is not current could potentially be disqualified. The first rounds should be played before the middle of February, and subsequent rounds will each last about 5 or 6 weeks, as indicated below. The final will be on Sunday 5th August 2012. It is intended that the final will be shown on BridgeBase Online and teams who qualify for the final must be prepared to play under those conditions.
Prize money for the winning team is £1000, and the runners-up get £200. The winner of the competition normally represents the YC in the Lederer. If one or two members of the winning team are not available for the Lederer then a replacement player or pair should be selected from the runners up if available. If a team cannot be made up via this route then the privilege of representing the YC will be offered to the losing finalist. All participants in the Knockout must be YC members and it follows that all members of the team representing the YC in the Lederer will also be YC members.
